About the Book

WARNING: Reading Frenchship may activate an intense compulsion to pack a bag for an extended trip to France.
Frenchship is an adventure story. It is the true account of an American couple who decided to spend the first year of their retirement in Southern France.
The author, Allen Johnson, is a talented fellow. Not only is he a bilingual Ph.D psychologist with a gift for story telling, but he is also a dynamic keynote speaker, musician, mountain climber, and artist. He draws on all those passions for admission into French society. The author enters the homes and hearts of the French by immersing himself in a truckload of activities: basketball, hiking, dancing, jazz, entertaining, and-as a return gift to the French-a free weekly course in English.
Frenchship is about the colorful characters the Johnsons encounter-with all the confusion, faux pas, and laughter that follows. The reader gets the invariably funny inside story on topless bathing, nightclubbing, and the art of conversation and French cuisine.
Even more, Frenchship is a reflection on what makes the French so bewilderingly…well, French to an American traveler. The author explores the differences between American and French culture: what each nation adores and deplores about each other.
Finally as an extra bonus, the helpful appendices will guide the reader to a more thorough understanding of French life and language. In short, the book is the perfect companion for anyone who seeks an entertaining and considered understanding of the French joie de vivre.
