About the Book
DELAMORE'S DREAMS is a family saga set in a gritty New York town in the 1960s. A prodigal son and his estranged hard-luck father fight for respect and find the strength to prevail in this uplifting coming-of-age story. It is a novel of a family in crisis and a town in transition during a passionate era. The book illuminates the durability of the human spirit in telling of the Delamores, a clan coping with problems, dealing with loss, and struggling to endure.

The obstacles that confront and transform the Delamores reflect the turbulent decade in which they have settled in their adopted hometown of Barrington, a polarized community of affluent Jewish and working-class Italian families. The heart of the story is about a boy learning to be a man, and a man learning to be father. But the book also explores hard-edged social problems (e.g., racism, drug use, teen violence and gang behavior) that changed the face of many American communities in the 1960s.

The novel may remind readers of other books of teens and families in conflict, such as RICH MAN, POOR MAN; THE WANDERERS; THE OUTSIDERS; ORDINARY PEOPLE and EMPIRE FALLS. The two protagonists are Charlie and Nick Delamore. Charlie, the father, is a hustler and wayward dreamer of dreams who becomes promoter of a successful polo club in Westchester County, New York. He risks losing his family as he pursues his schemes. Nick, the second of three sons, is a shy French-Irish kid who moves to the tough "Little Italy" neighborhood in Barrington. In time Nick will confront his fears and become an aspiring Golden Gloves boxer. He will be seduced by the thrill of street fighting. But when gang violence escalates, a tragedy forces Nick to change his life. Yet Nick's reconciliation with his dominating father, Charlie, will be even more difficult than the break from his gang. The resolution of these and other conflicts comes slowly and with sacrifice.

DELAMORE'S DREAMS is about the power of hope and forgiveness, the strength of family, and the lasting bonds of friendship.

Reviews
In the novel Delamore's Dreams, the reader can play God from on high, looking down on a family working out its destiny in 1960s southern Westchester (County, New York)....The author's intensely what-happens-next narrative style carries you along so compellingly that you barely notice that you're beginning to receive insights into things the author hasn't stated in so many words.
- Roy Potter, The Westchester County Times
