What if the Book of Revelation in the Christian Bible really is a literal prophecy but the ones who preach it don’t have the interpretation right? What would that look like? And who would the antichrist really be? What if the prophesized wraths of God were actually prophesies of environmental damage caused by humans themselves?

Apocalyptic literature was a popular genre around the 2nd century A.D. Julia Eaton’s second novel, The Devil in the Details is written as a modern day tribute to this ancient form of storytelling. Based on the Book of Revelation in the Christian Bible, the story follows Ava Clark and her friends and family as they are cast into a surreal world where prophecies come true, but not as they were expected to.

Ava and her sister, Alisa grew up thinking they knew right from wrong. In their small hometown of Boone, North Carolina it was easy to do as everyone else did and to follow the guidance of their family pastor. But when Ava takes a trip to Atlanta and meets Jason, the head of a homeless shelter and a self-professed atheist, her narrow view of the world begins to crumble. Then when Ava and her family disappear Alisa’s whole world falls into chaos as she realizes that everything she cares about is slipping away.

Across the country, Reverend Martin Phillips is also secure in his belief that he knows right from wrong, and he is not shy in telling anyone within earshot. But when his sister and her two sons also mysteriously disappear, he begins a cross-country trek to find out the reason. In Chehalis, Washington he meets Jack McCullen and the two men soon discover that something truly evil is happening in the world. But the questions remains, who is behind the evil?
