About the Book
|
BURBIA BOY, by Paul Steucke Sr.
From upstate New York to the early suburbia days of Northern Virginia, the author takes us on a journey from boy to manhood. Using his grandfather’s handwritten documents, family interviews, and old newspaper articles, he provides us with a personal history of what it was like for his grandfather to immigrate to and live in the United States, and what it was like for his parents to grow up, survive the Great Depression, and raise two children.
The author, for the first six years of his life, grew up in a small town in upstate New York where his father taught music in the regional High School. Falsely accused of using a school vehicle for personal use, his father moved the family to Virginia where he found employment with the Internal Revenue Service in Washington DC.
The balance of the story is an entertaining account of growing up in northern Virginia, school, army life, work, college, travel, and love.
The last chapter, titled “Words from Wally”, caps off the book by providing an additional perspective from the author’s brother who is six years older.
A detailed and interesting list of significant events and inventions created during the Twentieth century is listed in the back of the book.
