Laoch was bred at Southeastern Guide Dogs, Inc. Laoch (Lay-ock) means “hero” in Irish. This true story is about Laoch’s nearly two years with his volunteer puppy raisers, as seen through Laoch’s own eyes. This picture book has 21 watercolor illustrations of actual events that Laoch experienced. The events are both instructive and entertaining.

A puppy raiser’s task is to socialize the puppy, introducing him to every possible experience that he may have as an actual guide dog. In addition, the puppy must learn basic obedience skills such that when he goes back to school for his actual guide dog training, his trainers can concentrate on the specific skills needed by a guide dog. Puppy raisers must give love and care, yet be prepared to give up the dog when he his ready for his formal guide dog training.

Guide dog puppies are bred from dogs that have the intelligence, attitude, and health required for a working dog. Their jobs are not easy. One of the things they must learn is “intelligent disobedience.” Guide dogs will refuse commands that may put their blind partners at risk.

Since writing this book, Laoch has graduated. He works as both a sight and physical assist dog. Laoch assists his blind partner at home and helps her take public transportation to her fulltime job. Less than 1000 guide dogs are graduated per year in the whole country, so Laoch is in a truly exclusive club!

LAOCH, WE MISS YE AND WISH YE WELL!

Reviews

I wanted to let you know that I read your book to my class today and had some good responses. Here are some of their comments:

  • Colorful illustrations, the characters look real (I got a lot of "awwws" every time I turned the page.)
  • The writing is good because it shows the dog's thinking...it's like Laochis writing the story. It helps usunderstand Laoch better. - Very funny!
  • It helps us know how hard it is to be a guide dog puppy and what itmight be like to be blind.
  • Laoch sounds like a kid. Wecan relate to him. (They really connected to Laoch...many of them said 'my mom says that to me too!')
  • Interesting front cover, it grabs our attention.
  • We like that it is a true story.
