About the Book
Scouring the globe for a cure: a disabled man’s experiences with stem cell treatment is an account of vgrafen’s travels in search of a cure for paralysis, centered upon his recent stem cell treatment in Azerbaijan.

The book begins with a description of v’s condition before and after his accident, his struggles to accept his injury and his attempts to find a cure for paralysis, both in America and abroad. The reader follows v and his devoted wife, Pia, as they wrestle with and finally decide to head overseas to Azerbaijan for an experimental bone marrow stem cell procedure; non-technical descriptions of current experimental treatments and the state of stem cell research in America are given, along with financial and psychological considerations pro and con for undergoing non-FDA approved foreign medical procedures.

In Baku, v takes the reader through what he experiences out on the streets and then in the clinic, offering honest and direct observations and comparisons to Azeri and American medical practices. The reader is taken through a day-by-day chronicle of events, including a travelogue of the people and places they visit, details of the actual procedure and the medical staff, his recovery and return to the States, along with periodic updates on his post-procedure condition and some essential advice for fellow health travelers.

vgrafen is informal, self-deprecating and often humorous, and always has an eye on his goal: finding a cure for the nightmare of paralysis. The reader is not spared an understanding of the suffering paralytics endure, yet vgrafen is no complaining disabled whiner but a positive, confident man with faith in his eventual cure.
