About the Book
Who belongs in baseball's Hall of Fame? That is, which players have EARNED the right to be there? This book answers that question and tells you precisely how good a career the player had compared to the other great players. For example, at the end of the 2010 season, Derek Jeter was the #6 best shortstop of the modern era (since 1920). And the #54 best player among ALL position players of that period.

Dr. Michael Hoban is a retired university professor. He earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from Columbia University. He has been a fan of the game for more than 60 years. The professor has been a serious baseball analyst since 1998 when he joined SABR (Society for American Baseball Research). This is his fourth book on baseball.

Professor Hoban has concluded that the Win Shares system devised by Bill James is the most comprehensive tool available to understand how good a season a player had. It includes offensive and defensive contributions and adjusts for all relevant factors.

So, the professor has developed the CAWS Career Gauge (Career Assessment/Win Shares). He has used Win Shares to create a series of benchmarks (or standards) to tell us which players (including pitchers) have HOF numbers based on their career on-field performance during the regular season. The CAWS Gauge is an objective tool that uses Win Shares to measure how good a career a player had.

It is the author's belief that if a fan finds value in the Win Shares system itself, then he/she will also find the CAWS Career Gauge to be of interest.

At the end of the 2010 season, there were only 116 position players and 51 pitchers since 1901 (a total of 167 players) who had posted obvious HOF numbers according to the CAWS Gauge. This book is about those players.

From Bill James (12/2/2004)

"Mike, ... I appreciate your using Win Shares for the purpose for which it was intended ... thanks ... Bill (James)"
