Too often, we get caught up in current political battles without a strong understanding of the meaning of America. America Matters: Why We Should Care, emphasizes the historical trajectory of the nation to show how the founding ideals and subsequent social developments are a source of pride and they offer hope for the future. It is a defense of the American structure of government which is based on the conviction that self determination and freedom are precious and they need to be defended.

This book examines current political debates in the light of the past to help elevate dialogue beyond what is normally discovered in much of our discussions. In the book, the reader will find an emphasis on holding government officials and media voices accountable for their actions by voicing opinions with respect and honesty. It guides readers through current issues such as security, civil rights, fiscal responsibility, and foreign policy to illustrate why we can discuss ideas in these areas more comprehensively and respectfully with other citizens who hold differing views.

America Matters debunks the politics of negativity and dread dominating national discussions. It is a defense of the system and all of the various ideologies which play a role in the creation of the national order. In the book, there is analysis of the pessimistic, anger filled rhetoric passing as debate and it questions those posing as pundits and seizes the opportunity to get American citizens beyond the petty machinations passing as discussions in our polarized world.

There is a place for disagreements and it is uniquely American to support the ability to hold disparate views. However, there is too much judgment and crass manipulation in the name of ideological purity. This book attempts to cut through some of the more rabid analysis filling our airwaves.

There are dangers facing America. But there is nothing we can not overcome with more discussion and deeper respect. This is a book about the promise of a great nation.
