About the Book
|
On
a recent November evening, Fletcher Fulcher has been gunned down and
mortally wounded. The unknown assailant flees, leaving our woebegone
character alone at death's door. The following morning, a trauma-free
Fletcher, awakens in his own bedroom. Initially, he contributes yesterday's
events to a nightmare. However, as he goes about his daily routine,
he discovers something missing - people. He has become the sole inhabitant
of earth.
Where did everyone go? - A most perplexing and lonely situation.
Imagine, if you will, a world devoid of people. Our unfortunate victim
must try to maintain his sanity and solve the dilemma.
A struggle for survival ensues. During a snowstorm, the public utilities
crash. In the midst of the storm's onslaught, Fulcher labors to acquire
the basic necessities of life. Ironically, his plan for suicide must
be put on hold - he'd busy trying to stay alive.
At the end of a trying day, he has incurred a few, small victories.
It's time to sit back and reflect. How did he get in this mess ? Flashing
back to a troubled, guilt-filled past, he gains some insight. There's
some unfinished business that needs attention. Dying demands completion.
You can check out any time you want, but you can'tleave until the
slate is clean.
A key to the mystery resides across the street. His neighbor, Seth
Woodward, is an integral part of the picture. Seth, a paraplegic was
Fletcher's best friend, and he may be his worst enemy.
As the story unwinds, Fletcher revisits the Woodward domain. He recalls
a conversation with Seth. Woodward insisted it was possible to scare
yourself to death. Is it? And is this relevant to Fletcher's strange
imprisonment ?
Much of Fulcher's present predicament can be traced back to a horrible
mine explosion. The accident happens on his shift, and though he is
applauded as a hero, ugly secrets are soon to be revealed.
Just when Fletch thinks he's got the bizarre mess figured out, a stalker
appears. Now we've got two people in the world - a crazed madman,
and a man going mad. Inevitably, they cross paths and battle their
way to a wild conclusion.
