Trial by Fire and Ice takes you into the mind, body and heart of a runner attempting to run one of the most difficult endurance races of its kind. As if one hundred miles was not enough, this particular winter the course received 790 inches of snow leaving the first twenty-two miles covered with snowdrifts up to thirty feet high. Following the snow the course dropped down into the canyons of the American River where temperatures topped one hundred degrees during the day.
The author spent nearly two years preparing for this event and the book gives you an insight into the enormous amount of training and preparation necessary to attempt this difficult feat.
You will be taken step by step through ice, snow, heat and darkness You will experience blisters, stomach sickness, mosquitoes, chafing and bone wearying tiredness as the author runs and walks the Indian and pioneer trails that climb up and down the over 20,000 feet of ascent and descent through the Sierra Nevada mountains.
You will also share many uplifting moments as the author experiences the camaraderie of the trail, overcomes personal demons and answers the oft asked question, "Why would anyone want to run 100 miles?"
It is easy to give flip answers to this question, but meaningful discourse on this question is far more difficult and requires an objective evaluation of the hidden motives that make us do what we do.
This, many times, can only be accomplished by putting our experiences on paper, for it is hard to write and deny reality at the same time. More often the truth will spill through.
And so it does in this book, at least to the author's satisfaction.
Three hundred and ninety-eight fabulously fit runners started this race and only one hundred and ninety-eight finished.
Was this 57 year old first time entrant one of the finishers or did he succumb to the many perils of the Trial by Fire and Ice?
Read on and see.
