About the Book
Without the confidence to write his own stories, Finnegan chose me to write them for him. Sometimes memories swelled up in him like a tsunami, flooding his head with three stories at once. More often he pulled them in bits and pieces from deep caverns and dark caves. Many of his stories were painful to recall, leaving him exhausted by emotion as he paused to bolster himself before speaking. Others flowed as easily as nursery rhymes, told simply as playful enjoyment without point or lesson. As I listened, I’m sure I missed a few of the details. But I always did my best to honor the truth behind each story.

Read altogether, Finnegan’s stories frame his life, at least the early impressionable years, a time of innocence, adolescence, transition and independence. His carefree youthful experiences are rare in today’s world, a fast-paced technology-driven world that steals a child away too quickly.

If he could have, he might have shared more of his secrets with me. But these are the tales that bubbled to the surface. They’re all in this book. When first seeing them bound together, I think he was amazed by the uncommon life he was given. Finnegan did the living and the telling; I did the writing. This book is the product of our collaboration.
