About the Book
|
"Playing Dangerous Games" is the author's personal story about his introduction into the mysterious world of consensual sexual sadomasochism (SM). The fascinating story begins in the year 2005 at a top Canadian research University, and ends four years later in Los Angeles.
The unusual journey starts innocently enough when the author, working as a social scientist in the areas of leisure science and crime, stumbles across an academic article from Finland about underground practitioners of SM. After reviewing the scientific literature on the subject, the author somewhat reluctantly decides to schedule an SM session inside the dungeon of a world-class professional Dominatrix. That experience would turn his academic world upside down, and forever change him personally.
Playing Dangerous Games is much more than a personal story about the author--a researcher, teacher, social worker, friend and loving father. It is a broader story about larger processes of western socialization, assumptions underlying common knowledge, and fierce politics surrounding the interpretation of bodies, sexuality and people. With this purpose the account beautifully illuminates and artfully weaves together hidden stories of both author and readers.
Review by Katie Biitner, Anthropologist--"Playing Dangerous Games is amazing! It opened my eyes and encouraged me to think about certain aspects of sexuality, individuality, and research in new ways...The book is a quick and provocative read that will speak to a wide and varied audience."
