About the Book
Hidden discretely beneath Santa Cruz's college town and "surf city" public image is an unseen world of street crime, drugs and gang violence. David Anthony entered this world in high school when he joined a crew of street kids from one of Santa Cruz's blue-collar neighborhoods. Over the next several years, he participated in bloody street battles against surf tribes, White Pride gangs and Hispanic street gangs, and many of his friends were incarcerated, became addicted to drugs, and some lost their lives to the Santa Cruz streets. After a spiritual experience sparked a new desire to change his lifestyle, David found himself trapped in this criminal world by loyalty to his friends who where in the midst of a gang war and by gang rivals who don't forgive or forget. Using powerful imagery and vivid story telling, Town Boy provides an intimate, intriguing and sometimes shocking portrayal of a rarely seen dark side of one of Northern California's most beautiful and vibrant cities.
