About the Book
A recent article by Claudia Ricci in The New York Times announced, "Drumfever is sweeping the country as people discover the physical, psychological and spiritual rewards...even for those who can't read a note of music." Another article by Anne Cushman in Yoga Journal proclaimed that, "as a new wave of rhythm consciousness sweeps across the country, small drumming circles are springing up, oriented not toward performance and musical virtuosity, but toward personal transformation, consciousness expansion, and community building." In accord with this rhythmic reawakening, Michael Drake, author of the widely acclaimed The Shamanic Drum, has completely revised and expanded the 1991 edition for all those folks discovering the power of drumming. This useful book reveals profound teachings about shamanic drumming, which is a time-honored method of healing and helping others. Little known in Western culture, the "medicine" of shamanic drumming has, until recently, been a closely guarded secret. Due to global environmental degradation and escalating nuclear militarism, shamanic cultures have, in recent years, shared their teachings with non-native people. The intention is to teach practical ways of healing the planet, manifesting peace, and fulfilling one's life purpose.

Trained as a ceremonial drummer in the Mongolian and Native American shamanic traditions, Michael presents the first practical guide to applying this ancient healing art to our modern lives. Through a series of simple exercises, lessons, and rituals, he teaches you the basic shamanic methods of drumming. The focus is on creating sacred space, invoking the powers of creation, journeying, power practice, initiating change through intent, drum therapy, drum circle dynamics, archetypal healing rhythms, and the universal rhythmic phenomena that come into play whenever we drum. The techniques are simple and powerful. The benefits include relaxation, healing, more energy, greater mental clarity, enhanced creativity, deeper self-awareness, and communion with the resonating web of life. Feelings of peacefulness, timelessness, and spiritual well-being are common along with a oneness of feeling and purpose with the totality of a dynamic, interrelated universe. This experience of mystical union with the cosmos is said, by many of the world's spiritual traditions, to be the final realization. Consciousness rediscovers its true nature and recognizes itself in all things. Shamanic drumming is a simple and effective way to induce this profound state of consciousness. Whether you are an accomplished percussionist or a total beginner, this user-friendly book will help you harness the power of drumming.

Reviews
The Shamanic Drum expresses things as they are, and it's indeed true that the drum and the proper ceremonies are the way in which we balance and harmonize the energies of the Earth, its creatures, and our relationship with all realms. I have noticed that the word Shaman often gives the idea of something magical, extraordinary, when in essence every living being has the means to harmoniously interact with the pulses of life.
