'Ramblings of a Nostalgic Old Red' is a selection from over 200 articles written for various periodicals, magazines, newspapers, and websites, during the last 20 years. They cover several facets about the game of soccer, some humorous, some sad, and others thought provoking. They also help the reader understand the changes that have occurred in English soccer over the last 20 years. His articles transmit his knowledge of, and passion for not only Manchester United, but also for the game of soccer, which makes this book a must read not only for Manchester United fans, but soccer lovers in general. The interview with World, and European Cup winner Nobby Stiles is particularly poignant and moving, as is the interview with former United star Albert Scanlon. His description of the games from Manchester United’s first ever excursion into competitive European soccer, when they became the first English club to enter what was then European Cup, are brilliantly told, making the reader feel as though they were in attendance themselves. Many of his articles, especially those written more than 10 years ago, describe the way he saw the route which the English game was taking, and it is remarkable just how accurate his predictions were. Clare has become a respected author and historical gatekeeper, charting much of the club’s history in his earlier books Forever a Babe, The Men Who Were the Busby Babes, and The United Tour of Manchester.

Clare was born in Manchester in 1945 and educated at St Gregory's Tech High. He has an abounding love for Manchester United FC and the game of soccer. Over the last 60 years he has traveled the world watching the game and he is a gatekeeper historian of the soccer club. |
